Siren's Suckhole
"Countless ships and countless lives, countless screams and countless cries, down they go into the hole, the siren's sound will claim their souls. I just made that up." - from the memoirs of Lewin Von Treet, Vault: the Land of Stuff and Things
Description
Located between the three major islands of the Arrowheads, Siren's Suckhole is a massive maelstrom coupled with a whirlpool that drags even the largest vessels to the bottom of the ocean. Due to its location, most ships are able to avoid it by skirting east and sticking close to shore but that does put most ships in pirate waters. Avoiding it to the west puts ships in open ocean where all manner of underwater leviathans and beasts abound. But taking chances close to Siren's Suckhole is worse than both options, because getting too close seems to draw ships toward the tumultuous waters. Survivors claim they felt called to, as though something beneath the waves wanted them to come. Something wanted them to die.
The pirates of Broken Compass have an unusual relationship with Siren's Suckhole. The crass name came from them, and they seem to be somewhat immune to the siren call other sailors describe. Broken Compass pirates sail the waters close to the whirlpool with regularity and almost always come back alive. If there is something supernatural about the place, however, they don't speak of it. Discussing those waters is forbidden amongst the pirates of Broken Compass, and just as forbidden is sailing them if you're from anywhere else.
