Trine
The Elves have the forest domain of Lyr’Lowain, the dwarves the underground citadel of Dagmar, but the humans have made for themselves their own shining center of their civilization on Vault, and they call it Trine. One could spend their entire life within the city and never see all there is to see. And yet, the city beckons its people to the ocean with the promise of wealth, adventure, and the unknowable horizon. I myself take great pride in Trine, and I was born a world away from its gates. That’s just the kind of place it is. -- from the memoirs of Lewin Von Treet, Vault: the Land of Stuff and Things
City Description
Population: ~10,000
Founded: 2100 (290 years ago)
Rather than build a city where its people must contend with the will of the ocean, the founders of the port city of Trine embraced the sea as their own. Trine is built atop gently lapping waves that meander through canals that act as streets and placid throughways to magnificent structures atop the water. The people of Trine do very little walking as a part of everyday life. The city runs through the canals, and the people use boats, barges, rafts, and gondolas to navigate the Glimmering Pearl (a nickname Trine has well earned).
Nearly every structure in Trine is built with a marble mined off the coast in the Gossamer Sea. This off-white marble veined with pure iridescent white creates the illusion of shimmering light when the sun sits low in the sky. Poets have claimed there is no sight more breathtaking in all of Vault than Trine at sunset.
And the poets of Trine would know. It has long stood as more than just a center of trade for Core Vandal and beyond. Trine claims the boast of an artist’s refuge. Having long offered financial incentive for artists of all kinds within its walls, the city has become a utopia for sculptors, writers, painters, florists, musicians, woodworkers, and more.
With so much success, Trine has also seen its fair share of devastation. An unforeseen and strangely unnatural tidal wave in 2278 ruined over half the city, destroying homes and lives. The rebuilding process is what began the renaissance of art in the city previously focused only on profits. While incentivizing stonesmiths to work with the Gossamer marble, the city saw the value of the aesthete.
And with that realization came the sweeping changes to how the city was run. The palace built for the Queen Triderius IV was transformed into the Aurora, where Trine’s council convenes weekly to guide the city’s future. The crime and corruption that felt imperative to the city’s character was stamped out with resolve, and the Tidal Guard was established to keep the peace.
The Tidal Guard’s role grew until not only Trine was kept safe, but the waters of the West Gossamer Sea were patrolled. But Trine has come a long way since its roots as a shipyard. Most every boat in every canal and every ship used on the ocean around Trine is built by the shipwrights of Cypress.
From a shipyard founded by a group of sailors wanting to explore the lands west of Core Vandal, to a corrupt and filthy city teeming with dirty money and dirtier people, to a devastated waste, to the Glimmering Pearl, a standard by which all other cities compare: Trine may control the trade between the western islands of Vault and the inland nations through the River Pryce, but it does so to the benefit of all.
City Landmarks
The Aquara - a sphere of water held together by magical means located near the heart of Trine. It is one of the largest entertainment venues in the world, and explicitly prohibits blood sport. While combat for the sake of killing is outlawed in the Aquara, competition of many kinds is not only permissible but encouraged. Numerous sports take place here, but also light and water shows, animal exhibits, fashion shows and recreational activities open to the public. The Aquara can be rented out by Trine's citizens for their own artistic pursuits.
Seafoam Lodge - Less of an Inn and more of a high-end resort, the Seafoam Lodge is located near the coastal side of Trine and is free to stay for any merchants, sailors, or passengers traveling by boat. It has its own piers and offers ship repair and maintenance during a stay, which is where it makes its true profits. There are few places in the world seafaring people would rather have their livelihoods handles than the Seafoam Lodge.
The Aurora - once the most resplendent palace in Core Vandal, the Aurora was renovated to house the meeting place for Trine's Council every week. It is here the Council hears issues and votes on their resolutions for the betterment of the city. Once a month there is an open meeting where Trine citizens can attempt to replace a Council member in an open debate for the entire city to hear, after which a vote is immediately taken. The Aurora itself is a self-contained rotunda with gorgeous waterfalls between tiers plenty of area to view the Council in action.
Petera - where there are people, there are sources of food. Waste, discarded meals, and the people themselves attract predators, scavengers, and grazers. And the waters of Trine were once filled with animals and monsters of the deep who had found their way into a buffet of never ending food. That was until Petera found its way into Trine. This massive monstrous deep sea predator has made its home in the canals of Trine. Citizens often feel it moving beneath the water in the rocking of boats and the gentle wake it leaves. However, as the druids of Trine have confirmed, it has no taste for people, but rather for the many animals Trine attracts. Thus are the waters of Trine kept safe by the most dangerous presence in the city.
Gossamer Gazette - this tower houses the journalists, artists, and writers responsible for the only wide-circulation publication in Core Vandal. It can be found as far as Ology and Ar'Vayn. Known for asking tough questions, journalists who lose their lives while investigating corruption are forever enshrined in places of honor.
The Wonderland - a toy store the size of some villages, the Wonderland is a pilgrimage for children from all over Vault. Owned by Master Artificer Guthry Kilkelly, one could spend an entire day in this pseudo-playground and no see all there is to see. Papa Guthry makes sure every child leaves with a toy, even if they can't afford one. But simply seeing the crazy and splendorous contraptions housed within is enough to make the trip worth it.
Muses Square - the largest open area in the city is Muses Square, a place for artists to congregate and share a space. Many writers, poets, and painters claim there is a magic here that inspires and can lead artists to their masterpieces. From the outside, however, it can seem like a disorganized calamity. The gardens here are well-maintained and gorgeous but with so many people all together plying their arts, one could be forgiven thinking it more of a mess than a place for muses.
The Throughway - while Trine is now a habitat for the arts, its roots have always been in the trade between the Gossamer Sea, the Sea of Shimmerlight, and the southern elven kingdoms without having the sail too far west and contend with pirates. The infrastructure for using Trine as an entrance to the Pryce River and Elfhome Lake is embodied in the Throughway, a place where the arts are absent, but the drinking, cursing, and harsh ways of the dock workers on which the city was founded is still alive and well.
Queen's Meat - one of the most popular restaurants in the city, it resembles the city of Queen's Meet right down to a fireplace called the Scorching Sits and a statue in the center of the common room. Known for their overdone steaks and healthy salads.
Marvin's Marvels - a small potion shop that has the market cornered on potions of water breathing, and is great with selling fun potions for birthday parties.
Yovin's Glamour and Glitz for Gentlefolk - the most prominent and expensive clothing and fashion store in Trine. The owners hold garden parties that act as fashion shows for their patrons.
Rainbow River - a particularly filthy part of Trine near the bottom Throughway where much of the trash and refuse collects in the canals. The water has a greasy sheen that gives off a colorful look. It's rumored there are unnatural creatures living in the canals there.
Manse Languine - an upscale hotel in the upper crest of Trine, each room is akin to an estate grounds, and the staff live to serve every request given them.
The Jagged Dagger - a run down Inn in the Throughway known for being a common meeting spot for lowlifes and criminals
Stitch and Knit - a clothing store owned by Old Man Grayme, who hand knits every item in the shop in his rocking chair -- specializes in knitting depictions of pets into sweaters
