Denizen

"All of the roofs in Denizen are round. If you're reading my memoirs, I assume you haven't been all over Vault, so let me just...let me go ahead and assure you that Denizen has the most round roofs. It's not even a contest." - from the memoirs of Lewin Von Treet, Vault: the Land of Stuff and Things

City Description

Population: ~8000

Founded: 1925 (465 years ago)

Home of the fabled Archivists, the city of Denizen prides itself on proper form, strict protocol, and adherence to the rules and regulations that create a functioning society. Denizen takes the vision of Caim as a social utopia and enforces it with an arcane fist.

Originally founded as a place to house the Papers of Populace program, Denizen soon grew into a society of like-minded individuals bent on perfecting systems; systems that became guiding principles for the optimal living arrangement. The result was a city governed by practitioners of efficiency. Everything is planned in Denizen. Families, meals, occupations, dress, and more are arranged for the perfect society in which the concept of the individual bows to the grandeur of uniformity.

One of the four castes of Denizen are the Archivists. These world renowned mages devote their lives to studying trends in social, political, and natural activities to predict future outcomes. They are surprisingly accurate but incredibly secretive with their information, claiming to spread such divinations would seed disorder.

The other three castes, the Patrols, the Gardeners, and the Scribes all share responsibilities relating to the gathering of information. What began as the Papers of Populace to track and standardize Highcroft citizenry has become a global scavenger hunt for knowledge. It is not uncommon to find a citizen of Denizen on assignment in Vault, gathering random information for the betterment of the Archivists pool of information.

All of this fact-checking, record-keeping, and knowledge-sharing is supported by some of the most precise arcane practices in Vault. There are spells at work in Denizen which any wizard studying in Ology would give their last breath to learn.

City Landmarks

The Archive of Note - the most important place in Denizen, and according to the people of Denizen, the most important place in all the world. It's not a library considering it is not used for reading not for the keeping of books, but rather endless reams of parchment with countless facts about the world, triple-checked and validated.

Blackcap Commissary - where citizens of Denizen can acquire food, clothing, and equipment in exchange for marks of labor

Offices of Highcroft Populace - where a copy of every Paper of Populace is kept, organized and ready to recall at a moment's notice

The Hall of Spoken Truth - a massive council room where the Archivists hold audience for those who wish the inquire on the truths divined in Denizen. Rarely attended by even most of the Archivists, and generally seen as a waste of time, every now and again there is a request which is fulfilled, though no one knows why one request is filled over another. Which is likely the point.

People of Note

Pristine Archivist Zakara Yomo: Male Minotaur, primary speaker for the order, he is generally seen as condescending but has wisdom that informs his condescension

Belinda Balenot: Female Owlin, head researcher and in charge of assigning expeditions into Vault for information

Vrixathar: Beholder, the only known Beholder to operate in any society, Vrixathar is a lover of predicting the future and keeps all records of valid and invalid predictions
