Hemlock Bastille

"As part of my research for these memoirs I set out to spend a week imprisoned in Hemlock Bastille to truly comprehend what it was like for a prisoner there. I lasted one night before begging to be released." - from the memoirs of Lewin Von Treet, Vault: the Land of Stuff and Things

There is no more dreaded prison in all of Vault than the fortress of Hemlock Bastille. The prison is located on an island whose name has been lost to time, but is considered to be a creation of the gods due to its supernatural characteristics. To wit, any individual branded with the "grudge" is unable to leave the island. Legend says there were already people stuck on the island with the symbol of the grudge when the first people of Highcroft arrived on the island. Those first visitors to the island never left it alive, and the island became a cursed place where none were permitted to tread.

How much of that is true is unknown, but what is known is Dwather Hemlock was the first person to build on the island. Over time the estate grew and the Hemlock family came to utilize the unique properties of the island to keep dangerous people from harming others, having learned the secrets of the grudge brand.

Now, hundreds of years later, the descendants of the Hemlock family run the most secure prison on Vault. Once prisoners are branded with the grudge, they never leave. Some have called the place inhumane due to the inability to remove the mark, and thus the inability to ever leave, but only the most dangerous and deserving are brought to the prison. And only the Hemlock family knows the secrets of branding others with the grudge and, at least so common knowledge, have never abused that power.

Outside of the island's magical enforcement, Hemlock Bastille is also home to a rigid military structure to ensure order is maintained at all times. Antimagic fields and arcane countermeasures ensure prisoners are kept safe and secure. With no attempt at rehabilitation or eventual release, the prisoners of Hemlock Bastille spend their days in isolation with nothing more than parchment, ink, and quill at their disposal. There, in the dark, alone, they are required to write. Every day, a single piece of parchment must be filled or dire consequences await. Some prisoners write their life story. Some write tales of fancy. Others eventually divulge secrets and explain their crimes. And still others simply write nonsense, their minds meandering into madness from the isolation.

Every parchment from the prisoners is kept in the Bastille's hall of records, dating back hundreds and hundreds of years. Those records are for Hemlock eyes only, though King Cadogan has often demanded to see them, to no avail. Some whisper there are dark secrets recorded from evil minds in those records.

The prison descends into ever darker and ever lonelier chambers deep beneath the earth, and there are rumors that some immortal beings, even the first inhabitants of the island, dwell there for eternity. And according to the Hemlocks, these rumors are more than likely true. But not even they spend much time deep beneath the prison, comfortable to let sleeping dogs lie.
