Shalegar

"I know not what magics kept this place from falling to ruin but they are failing. The pedigree of the past succumbing to the degrading song of time is a lament even the arcane cannot stop from being sung. And there are none now who know the words or melody." - from the memoirs of Lewin Von Treet, Vault: the Land of Stuff and Things

Nestled in the southern reaches of the Mythrasil Forest, the tower of Shalegar is thought to have once pierced the clouds with its might. What remains now is a broken shadow of its former glory, though no one knows the purpose of whatever glory it may have once held.

There is no documented date on which the tower was built. It predates many of the settlements of Highcroft, and due to the arcane aura of the tower, many wise in the magical arts believe Shalegar to date back to the Constellation War. Such an assertion would make sense considering the power of the tower during Dragonfall.

When the people of Highcroft fought back against the tyrannical might of the dragons, Shalegar was used as a position of power. The magical energies protecting the tower during those times was still potent and that power allowed the people of Highcroft to protect themselves from the far stronger draconic presence in their lands. While many of the ways in which the people of that land overcame the dragons is lost to time, the power of Shalegar was undoubtedly used to their benefit.

After Dragonfall, the tower was abandoned but still revered. Many texts from the time hail the tower as being a sacred place, fit for the seat of gods. But when the Firetide War began over 500 years later, it seemed the power of Shalegar had all but faded, and the tower was abandoned in favor of more fortified positions in eastern Highcroft.

Nowadays, the tower is seen as a relic, some fairytale of generations past, and is primarily used as a staging ground for the Hunt of the Stag. There are those who occupy the tower but they are far from strategists and war leaders from times of old. They are now hunters, woodspeople, and those who knows the ways of the Mythrasyl.

Lead by Xavier Dumont, the people who now reside in Shalegar spend their days putting together hunting parties to enter the Mythrasyl Forest to hunt the white stag, a creature said to grant any wish to the person who catches it alive. They are not a terribly accommodating or welcoming people, but to those who can prove their mettle, they'll hunt alongside. The hunt stopped being about the wish long ago for the people of Shalegar. Now it's about the tradition, the livelihood, and the life they've built in the forest.

People still come from around the world to delve the mysteries of the tower, and Xavier and his people allow them to have their fill, but any magic that helped Dragonfall happen has long since left the tower, and there are no signs of it ever returning.
